Residents of Douglas County who do not live within the city limits of Douglasville or Villa Rica may contract with one of several private sanitation companies. Chamber member companies are listed in the local online business directory at www.douglascountygeorgia.com.

Natural Gas

Consumers can compare costs and services among several approved natural gas marketers and choose the company that suits their needs. Call the Georgia Public Service Commission at visit the PSC website at www.psc.state.ga.us.

The City of Austell provides natural gas service through the Austell Natural Gas System to residential, commercial and industrial customers in the cities of Austell, Douglasville and Powder Springs and in portions of Douglas and Cobb counties. Driver’s License and Renewals

New residents moving into Georgia from another state are required to obtain a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days of establishing a permanent residence. A license fee of $20 can be paid in cash or by money order, check, or credit card.

Vehicle Tags & Registration

Georgia vehicle license tags must be purchased within 30 days of establishing residency. All vehicles 1986 and newer must be titled, with the exception of trailers weighing less than 2,000 pounds. Georgia residents moving to Douglas County from another county must complete the address change within 30 days of moving since you cannot register a vehicle in Douglas County if you are homesteading in another county.

All 1995-2016 model year gasoline powered cars and light trucks require an emissions inspection prior to registration. Emissions inspections are required every year before the registered owner’s birthday and the cost of an inspection is capped at $25. Automobile owners must renew their registration and pay an ad valorem tax every year “during the 30-day period which ends on their birthday.” For registration locations or more information, contact:

Georgia MVD Self-Service Tag Kiosk

Residents with registered vehicles in Douglas County can take advantage of Georgia MVD Self-Service Tag Kiosks for a fast and convenient alternative when completing vehicle registration renewal. Tag Kiosks use scanning and touchscreen technology to securely updated vehicle information through step-by-step instructions and optional voice assistance. After a successful renewal, documents print instantly at the kiosk.

TIME TO VISIT THE DOUGLAS COUNTY COURTHOUSE

 Birth and Death Certificates and Marriage License

The Douglas County Probate Court, Vital Records Office, provides access to birth and death certificates for the individuals who died in Douglas County or individuals who were a resident of Douglas County at the time of death and died in another county in the State of Georgia.

Marriage licenses are issued by the Probate Court of Douglas County. Located in the Douglas County Courthouse.

Douglas County Environmental Health

The Office of Environmental Health provides services to promote a healthy and safe environment and protect community health. Services include restaurant permits and ongoing inspections, epidemiologic investigations, public pool permits and pool safety, tests for bacteriological quality and evaluation of sanitary protection of well water, lead and radon testing, sewage management and nuisance complaints regarding sewage, garbage and other environmental issues.

 Voter Registration

Mail-in voter registration applications are available at the county registration office, libraries, City Hall, and the WSA offices. Applications may also be obtained through the state’s website at www.sos.ga.gov/elections. You can check on your registration status by clicking on the MY VOTER PAGE button. DOUGLAS COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

A five member elected board governs the Douglas County School System. The superintendent is appointed by the board and is charged with the responsibility of administering the public school program of the Douglas County Board of Education.

Other communities in Douglas County include Lithia Springs, Fairplay and Winston. They are not incorporated and are governed by the Douglas County Commission.

READING IS FUN! Douglas County Library Information

Douglas County Libraries feature three full-service facilities conveniently located throughout the community. Library use is free of charge and open to the public, but a library card must be obtained to check out items and to use computers. Library cards are available at the circulation desk at any of the Douglas County libraries.

Each Douglas County Library features:

  • Books, CDs, DVDs, books on CD, periodicals and research materials
  • Children’s area with weekly story times for pre-school children
  • Summer reading programs
  • Multiple computers for public use with access to the Internet
  • Additional programs are provided weekly free of charge to the public

As a member of the Georgia PINES system, library users have access to books in 284 branches in Georgia, if a Douglas County library doesn’t have it – over 10 million books and other items can be forwarded to a Douglas County library at no charge. The Douglas County libraries are also part of the five-County West Georgia Regional Library System (Douglas, Heard, Carroll, Haralson and Paulding: www.wgrl.org).
